Realization of Blackness: From Innocence to Initiation Within the American Dream

One would reckon that the 21st century would be a period of acceptance. The earth has changed tremendously from a age when race determined every part of a person's prospect to a age when the content of a person's character may have just as much sanction as the color of his or her skin. There is one aspect, however, that has not changed: race still comes with boundaries, and at some mark in their lives, many human beings of minority ethnic groups are place in situations in which the boundaries of their race are presented to them. The ways in which these situations are handled impact how these human beings are affected by these boundaries throughout lifetime. This familiarity, known as "the realization of blackness," is very noticeable in the lives of many African-Americans, for the African-American struggle reigns supreme as the dominant racial effort between the majority white race and minority ethnic groups.
